Scholes is August's star

Just as Paul Scholes was a step ahead of his opponents last month, United's no.18 was peerless in the voting for ManUtd.com's August Player of the Month award - notching 5,000 of 8,000 votes, a 62 per cent landslide.

Scholes' jaw-dropping passing and his ability to get among the goals have not faded with age. He's started the 2010/11 campaign with the enthusiasm of a teenager, and enhanced his status as a precious and rare talent.

He produced a passing masterclasses at Old Trafford in the 3-0 wins over Newcastle and West Ham, and although his orchestrating at Craven Cottage wasn't rewarded with a win, he notched his 150th Reds goal in a 2-2 draw. His nearest challenger for the August gong, Dimitar Berbatov, polled 33 per cent of the vote, a nod towards his excellent start to the campaign.

The Bulgarian may have slipped into Scholes' shadow, but his displays - with three goals in four games - showed that, as Sir Alex said, "this could be his year".

Nani (3 per cent), Nemanja Vidic (1.5 per cent) and Darren Fletcher (0.5 per cent) made nominal contributions to the vote. But as with the voting in our poll, nobody could touch Scholesy on the pitch.
