Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City

"We could have won 6-0 today, and the fact we made those mistakes made it probably the best derby of all time. You’re left pondering what you’d rather have; win 6-0 or win the greatest derby of all time. I’d rather win 6-0!"

- Sir Alex Ferguson

Indeed, it might have been the greatest Manchester derby of all time. It was definitely the most hyped about derby in years, due to City's spending spree throughout the summer, snatching up Carlos Tevez and having a 100% record coming in to this match. The red half of Manchester has been the champions of English football for 3 years in a row now.

[Fletcher went home as the Braclay's Man of the Match after scoring 2 goals]

The game started living up to the hype, with Wayne Rooney scoring inside the first 2 minutes. A mistake by Ben Foster brought City back into the game in the 16th minute. Darren Fletcher had 2 goals to his name in the 2nd half, both canceled by Craig Bellamy's brace, the second of which came in the 90th minute after an uncharacteristic mistake by Rio Ferdinand.

[Owen celebrating the winning goal in the 95th minute]

Old Trafford that had been so loud throughout the match suddenly died down losing their 3 points at the very last minute. The fourth official added the minimum of 4 minutes to the match. United showed their winning mentality, not giving up until the last second. It paid off when Ryan Giggs saw Michael Owen unmarked on the right side of City's goal. Giggs slipped the ball through and Owen hit it to the back of the net. Owen couldn't have picked a better time to score at Old Trafford for the first time!

[Ryan Giggs causing problems for City's defense]

Ryan Giggs showed an amazing performance, especially in the second half. He runs down the left wing and creating space for himself, providing brilliant crosses to create chances for United. His assist for Owen was simply amazing.
