3 games, 2 starts, 4 goals

It wasn't a good performance by United's standard, and we really need to do better going forward this season. For most of the game (and the previous two games), there seems to be a lack of urgency and creativity within the team. But of course, celebrating Sir Alex Ferguson's 1,000th league match in charge of Manchester United wouldn't be right without the late winner drama.

Celebrating the winner in the 92nd minute

United started the match well, controlling possession for the first few minutes and looked to find a rhythm. But 16 minutes into the match, Southampton scores first through a Lambert header, who beat Rafael to the ball. But only 7 minutes later, our signing of the summer Robin van Persie equalized, through a Valencia cross, with this beauty:

Brilliant take for first goal
I think that was the best goal of the match, quality wise. I believe it was also Valencia who tried to set up van Persie again, but the open chance was squandered. 30 seconds later, Southampton took the lead again. From then on, United seemed flat and was unable to create chances. United still had more possession, but Southampton's attacks looked more dangerous in general. Until 5 minutes before the end of normal time, I thought we were going to lose. Second loss in three games is never a good sign; definitely not how you want to start a new campaign.

And then, van Persie to the rescue. After a dreadful penalty at 2-1 down, he scored his first hat-trick for Manchester United, the last of his three goals was his 100th league goal. I am regretting that I have Wayne Rooney in my FPL team instead of him, as I believe many other FPL managers are.

The goals and his post-match interview has gained him a place in many of United fans' hearts. Thanking Paul Scholes, who came in off the bench to dictate the midfield, and saying that Scholes was his man of the match was a class touch.
